Learners are used to the teacher standing in front of the class, giving an example of how one of the new calculations work and then giving them loads and loads of homework to complete for the next day, just by following her steps in the example she gave them.
What is the result of this?
Learners are not contructing their own knowledge and mathematics (my subject) becomes boring.
I want learners to realize that mathematics are fun and applicable to any and every part of our daily lives.
Teachers must make more use of multi-media to enhance the learners constructing of knowledge and to get them interested in the subject again.
There is a lot of things available, for example, video's, software for mathematics and then, in particular what I want to stress today, games.
Games make way for groupwork, learning and most of all it's fun!
So teachers, stop being old-school and get into the new age!
